When you’re camping, you may sometimes prefer to bake instead of grill. The oven here was made using cardboard boxes and household items. As well as being a portable kitchen, it is also a great food warmer or icebox when traveling. You’ll have a happy camper on your next camping trip if you bring this oven.

How Can I Make A Camping Box Oven?
When you enjoy the great outdoors, wouldn’t it be great to have freshly baked treats with you? Take this homemade outdoor oven camping or use it in your own backyard. We made it from everyday household items. Materials for the project consisted of a large box that formerly held a lot of 8 1/2 x 11-inch office paper, aluminum foil, scissors, a stapler, and duct tape. The size of the food items determines the box size that you use.
Prepare Your Supplies: Step 1
It is important to gather supplies. It will take you about 30 linear feet of heavy-duty aluminum foil and about 50 feet of aluminum high-heat tape to complete this project. Choose a nesting apple box. Your base should fit into the top of the box. Separate the parts of the box. Make a fold-down flap by cutting open the top three sides. Make sure the box knife doesn’t slip when cutting away from the body.
Keep the Box Sealed: Step 2
Boxes that are at least 12″ x 12″ x 18″ are ideal. The orientation of the box will determine what is at the top, front, and bottom of the oven. It is recommended that box ovens be wider than they are deep, and they should be large enough to accommodate a small wire rack. Using foil tape, make sure all the walls of your camp oven are solid by sealing them at the top with a box. The wire rack will fit best on top of the box.
Build A Solid Box Bottom: Step 3
Check the area marked with the ‘X’ using the interior box piece. The oven will produce the most heat here. To prepare the foil, cut five 18″ wide sections of 12″ length. Line up the foil and fold it halfway. The aluminum foil should be secured to the bottom of the oven using 4 – 6″ pieces of aluminum tape.
Close the outside portion of the box and place the interior portion inside. Cover the handle openings on both sides and the flap portion of the outer box with 4″-6″ pieces of tape.
The First Section of the Box Should Be Covered: Step 4
About 10 feet of foil are required for this section. As you cover the box, secure the foil with 6″ of tape and smooth it over the surface. Cover the tape with 4″ sections as you smooth the foil over the surface. Closing the flap and covering the interior is very easy. You need to continue working until you reach the edge of the box on which you started. Tape all the inside edges as squarely as you can, then use small sections of tape on the outside.
The Second Section of Foil Should Be Added: Step 5
Approximately 8 linear feet of foil will be required for this portion. Prepare the box by cutting the short side first. With a piece of 4″ tape, tape the foil to the box. Cover the bottom of the oven with foil, smooth it up to the short end, and extend it to the other end. Use tape along the way to secure it.
You shouldn’t tape around the edges of the foil; instead, you should cut the corners as you go around the top. Ensure that all foil edges are taped to the inside of the oven so there are no openings. Tape all the edges down as you smooth the foil until you run out. You can improve the appearance of your oven for longer by making sure that all corners are smooth and square.
The Second Section of Foil Should Be Added: Step 6
You will need approximately 4′ of foil for this section of the project. Cover the foil with tape and secure it with a safety pin. Your foil was centered in the oven when you taped it to the top. The tape surrounded both sides of the foil-like wrapping paper. The foil was covered with tape if any holes appeared.
The Flap Should Be Secured: Step 7
This oven sits on top of a flat surface with the top of the oven opening to let the surface cool. Slice the tape into three pieces of four inches. Two pieces were placed on the flap, one on the top, and one connected to them. When you insert charcoal into this oven, it needs to have a gap so the charcoal can properly off-gas.
A Guide to Oven Furnishing: Step 8
Stackable pie pans, aluminum cookie sheets, small grills, 4 – 6″ x 18″ pieces of foil, sand, or pinto beans, and two aluminum cans are needed for this step. Put approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the beans or sand inside the cans.
Finally, tape the top of the can with a 2″ strip of aluminum foil to prevent the beans or other contents from falling out. Ensure that the cans are securely wrapped with foil. Place the cans onto the foil and fold the ends over. Assemble the pie pans into a square and bake in the oven. Cover the cans with a grill. Put the coals inside the pie pans when the coals have heated up. If the heat of each coal is 50 degrees, you can add as many coals as you need to achieve the right cooking temperature.
After baking, you must be careful to move the box oven immediately afterward, as it is hot on the bottom.
How Do You Make A Homemade Oven Box?
Several methods are available for making a box oven. In the following directions, we show how to make a hinged-lid box oven. The sturdy materials suggested should last for many years if you use them properly and keep them in good condition. Please remember that the box oven should only be used outdoors.
The Following Materials Are Needed:
- At least two medium-sized sturdy boxes, approximately the same size
- Heavy-duty aluminum foil
- Multipurpose tape
- A total of four empty aluminum cans
- A pie tin made of aluminum
Here Are the Steps You Need to Take
- Make a hinged “door” that covers the entire opening of the box by cutting off one of the top flaps of the box and attaching it to the other flap. Ensure that all corners, cracks, and holes are covered with foil tape. Your box should not be exposed to any cardboard or it may catch fire!
- The shiny, reflective side of the foil should be on the outside of the box. Cover all cracks, corners, and holes with foil tape.
- It will be easier to insulate the box oven if you cut five pieces of cardboard that fit well into the sides.” Cover the five pieces of cardboard with foil (shiny, reflective side out) and seal all cracks, corners, and holes with foil tape.
- Ensure that all five sides (except the door, of course) of the box oven are “insulated” by the foil-covered cardboard. This now makes the box oven a double-walled structure. Its hinged door opens UPWARD.
- Placing your four aluminum cans inside the box oven (weigh them down with some water so they do not topple over) is the next step. Done! The box oven is complete.
Is it Possible to Cook with a Cardboard Oven?
The charcoal is ready to use when it starts to turn grey, so you can start it with a campfire or chimney when you’re ready to cook. The heat produced by each briquette is approximately 50 degrees, so planning ahead is essential. After that, carefully insert 8-9 pieces of burning charcoal into the pie tin using tongs, and place the tin into the box oven (on concrete or dirt outside). Put the 9×13 metal pan (or the pan that will fit in the box oven) where you will bake your food on top of the aluminum cans.
Two heavy rocks should be placed in front of the “door” (leaving just a little crack open so the charcoal can get some air). This will prevent the door from opening while the cooking process takes place. Approximately an hour after the charcoal is lit, the temperature will stay the same.
If needed, have additional coals ready to add (in the starter chimney or campfire if possible). Make sure the box oven is not left unattended. Stay safe while camping and have fun!
Is it Possible to Use Foil Boxes in The Oven?
Aluminum foil food containers are typically made of aluminum. Aluminum is heat-resistant. -20 degrees F to 400 degrees F are the temperature ranges for this material. To-go trays and containers are most commonly made from this material.
