Can Oven Insulation Catch Fire | Facts You Need to know

July 2, 2022 by John Stoll Leave a Comment

In the market, many types of insulation are available, and consumer preferences shape them. In general, people insulate their ovens with glass fiber. Such insulation uses high-quality glass fiber and other materials. Therefore, glass fiber insulation is fire resistant and rarely catches fire.

Can Oven Insulation Catch Fire

Can Oven Insulation Catch Fire?

We have mentioned earlier that oven insulation, and glass fiber insulation, can’t catch fire. But other insulation with different materials may catch fire. The insulations made of wool or fabric are flammable, and it’s elementary to catch fire. Experts always recommend using glass fiber for the oven. The oven produces massive heat and is inflammable to fire.

A heating rod in an oven produces a huge temperature like 350 F, and the chamber flows heat to the outside frame of the range. Therefore, you can’t touch your oven, and if you do, you may burn your hand.

Most people don’t know that modern ovens use insulation for our safety purpose until they open up the chamber and discover the roles of insulation. As we all know, insulation absorbs excessive temperatures, so we use this material in industries, in our homes, in our warehouses, and in many other places. Currently, we are also seeing insulation used in ovens as a preventative measure.

Types of Insulation

There are several types of insulation on the market, but they are not appropriate for the oven. Some of them are flammable in the heat, but some are not. We only use non-flammable insulation to prevent fire hazards.

There are several types of insulation mentioned below-

  • Polyurethane Foam
  • Fiberglass
  • Mineral Wool
  • Cellulose
  • Polystyrene (EPS)

Of all of them, only mineral wool and fiberglass insulation are non-flammable, and we can use those in our oven. But the question is, which one of the insulations can we use for the stove?

‘The answer is ‘Fiberglass insulation is the best choice for the oven.’

We choose fiberglass for two reasons. First, fiberglass insulation is an artificial fireproof glass fiber and can tolerate massive temperatures. And fiberglass insulation is very budget-friendly than mineral wool insulation.

Is Insulation Dangerous for Health?

There is nothing harmful in your fiberglass insulation. But when you think of replacing this may be detrimental because it has dust and junk. After that, it can also spread particles even though you don’t touch the insulation. So we recommend you use hand gloves and a full-face mask when you touch those directly. It’s better to let professionals replace your insulation.

Can You Use An Oven Without Insulation?

Using an oven without insulation can bring you at risk. Insulation helps to reduce the outer temperature of your oven. Therefore the oven will spread heat all around the oven rather than the targeted areas. As a result, it takes more time to cook.

Meanwhile, excessive temperatures can cause a fire incident in your oven and heat the door’s handle. Thus it can burn your hand and, most dangerously, harm your children. So you can’t use an oven without insulation.

What to Do if an Oven Catches Fire: Step by Step Guideline

We have mentioned that insulation glass fiver is inflammable, and there is very little chance that oven insulation will catch fire. But it’s expected that either insulation or other causes can catch fire in your oven. Just never get so panic earlier and try to understand the situation first.

Here are some steps you can follow if your oven catches fire.

  1. Keep close your oven door.
  2. Turn off the oven switch and let the oven burn if it is impossible to control the fire.
  3. Move all flammable items from the oven.
  4. Use the anti-fire spray in the fire area.
  5. After the fire is off, open all windows to move out all the smoke.
  6. Carefully open the oven door and clean it up if possible.
  7. If the fire goes uncontrollable, leave the house and call 911.

It’s better to prevent fire incidents. We suggest you use a perfect oven and keep an anti-fire spray in your oven.

Frequently Ask Questions

What Type of Insulation Is Used in Ovens?

Generally, ovens use glass fiber insulation as inflammable at extreme temperatures. In the market, you find many forms of insulation in different materials such as fiberglass, rock wool, and cellulose. But all of them are not appropriate for oven use. For the oven, glass fiver insulation is the best choice.

Can I Remove Insulation From Oven?

You can remove the oven insulation by opening the heating chamber and the outer part. But it is not an easy task and depends on different models. On the other hand, insulation can harm your health by spreading different microparticles. You must follow safety instructions while removing insulation. We suggest that you call an expert to remove the insulation.

Does An Oven Really Need Insulation?

You can’t use an oven without insulation because of your safety. Insulation helps in lowering the temperature of your oven’s exterior. Without insulation, the oven will distribute heat throughout the entire oven rather than the targeted sections. As a result, the cooking process takes longer.

Meanwhile, high temperatures might fire your oven and cause the door handle to heat up. The hot door handle can burn your hand and, more importantly, injure your children. On the contrary, you can’t use an oven without insulation.

Conclusion

ovens use glass fiber insulation, and materials used in glass fiber are highly heat resistant. And in standard oven temperature, up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit,  glass fiber insulation can’t catch fire. So nothing to worry about it; you can safely use your oven.
