Breville Smart Oven Tips (Cooking, Size, and More)

Unlike most conventional ovens, the Breville Smart Oven is more versatile and more effective than most toaster ovens. Besides its exceptional temperature accuracy (it was always within 10 degrees of the set temperature in our testing), it has a variety of cooking modes, including slow cooking, air frying, dehydrating, and convection.

With this oven, you can slow cook, dehydrate, and air fry and replace your conventional oven for most cooking tasks. If you intend to use something other than those features, the Smart Oven Air isn’t worth its high price.

Tips for Using the Breville Smart Oven

Breville’s Smart Oven is the company’s latest combination toaster oven/air fryer. This device combines a traditional oven, a convection oven, and an oven-style air fryer. Breville is a well-known higher-end appliance brand, and its ovens are currently rated among the top four by Consumer Reports.

The Smart Oven Air Fryer comes with a quarter-size roasting tray and rack, a nonstick pizza pan, and an air fryer mesh basket. A standard model and a pro model of the Smart Oven are available.

There are also two more settings on the Breville Smart Oven: Proof and Dehydrate. In the end, if you plan to replace your traditional oven with a Smart Oven, I recommend the larger Pro. In any case, either one will work well in your kitchen.

For Using the Breville Smart Oven, Here Are Some Tips and Observations:

Size

  • Breville Smart Oven sits on the countertop and is not something you would want to tuck away after use. Considering all its capabilities, including roasting a 14-pound turkey, it must be a suitable size. Finding a place near an outlet is fine if you have limited kitchen counter space. The dimensions are 21.4″(W) x 17.2″(D) x 12.8″(H).
  • Breville’s instruction book suggests operating the oven using a dedicated circuit. When choosing a counter spot, keep this in mind.
  • With the convection fan running, however, the oven is very loud. When you cook, you should listen to music to minimize the noise.

Cooking

  • The Breville instruction book recommends using the roasting pan instead of the mesh baskets when air frying fatty foods, such as chicken wings. Oil drips inside your door when you remove the food for the first time.
  • You can catch the drippings by placing a roasting pan in a rack below the mesh basket, as I find the roasting pan easier to clean than the crumb tray. The oil from the wings can also drip on ingredients such as vegetables or potatoes in the roasting pan. Moreover, you can cook two racks at once. You’ll save energy and time and get a full meal.
  • Your Smart Oven Air tends to cook and brown many of the same dishes faster than a conventional oven (using the same temperature). If the oven were more compact, it might help.
  • When using the “Super Convection” mode, you can reduce the cooking time for items such as fries by not using the convection mode.

Cleaning

  • Crumbs may fall through when cooking with mesh air fry/dehydrating baskets. When using one basket, I prefer to use the roasting pan underneath to catch crumbs since it is easier to clean than the crumb tray.
  • Keep your crumb tray clean after each use. Hand washing is the best way to extend the life of accessories like the roasting pan and wire rack.
  • Use a soft sponge or plastic scouring pad to clean mesh baskets. To clean food particles caught between the holes, I found a plastic brush with bristles to be a great option.

Accessories

  • Breville Bamboo Cutting board fits on top of Breville Smart Oven. The unit is ideal for small kitchens where space is at a premium. Using it as a cutting board is perfectly fine. It won’t melt or burn when left on the Smart Oven while cooking.
  • And this is a set of 3 mesh baskets for the Smart Oven Air. One mesh basket is included with the oven for air frying and dehydrating. The oven can hold up to four baskets, so cooking in batches is more efficient.
  • The Breville 12″ x 12″ enamel baking pan is a good addition to the oven, and it’s also good for baking cookies.
